Cambridge NERC Doctoral Training Partnerships

Graduate Research Opportunities

UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements will be eligible for a full NERC studentship. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may still be eligible for a fees-only award. More information can be found here.

A full studentship will cover the cost of all fees and the student will receive the standard NERC maintenance allowance (for 2017/18 is £14,553 pa).

Overseas students may be able to join the programme but would need other sources of funding. Overseas students can apply for University wide funding schemes such as:

Gates Cambridge Trust

Cambridge Overseas & Commonwealth Trusts

Details of these schemes can be found on the Graduate Admissions website.

Overseas students can also apply for funding from external bodies to support their studies as well as from their home countries or international schemes.

*CASE* (Collaborative awards in science and engineering)

CASE studentships (Collaborative awards in science and engineering) provide doctoral students with a first-rate, challenging research training experience within the context of a mutually beneficial research collaboration between academic and non-academic partner organisations.

NERC provides funding for CASE studentships through two funding routes, one of which is by permitting institutions awarded funding for NERC studentships to award a number of these studentships as CASE studentships.

NERC require the CASE partner to supplement the studentship by paying at least £1000 per year to the lead Research Organisation for the duration of the studentship, and to meet the extra expenses incurred by students visiting and working in their establishments. They are also expected to contribute in cash or in kind towards necessary materials.

The student must spend between three and eighteen months in total with their CASE partner in a workplace outside the academic environment. These requirements apply to all CASE studentships regardless of their funding route.
